Brent McMunn, music director for the University of Southern California Thornton Opera, will host a master class for California State University, Bakersfield opera singers on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 7-10 p.m. in the Doré Theatre.

This is a warm-up event for the singers in anticipation of their opera night performance on Feb. 1.

According to Peggy Sears, CSUB professor of music, “Mr. McMunn will be taking the students’ material and will polish it with his expertise.”

McMunn made his Lincoln Center conducting debut 10 years ago with the New York City Opera. He has been a guest conductor for various productions including the Kentucky Opera, Calgary Opera, and the New Jersey Opera Theater. He has also worked with renowned conductors Zubin Mehta, Harry Bicket and Julius Rudel.

McMunn has appeared previously as a pianist on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Chamber Music Series, at the Library of Congress with the Julliard Quartet, at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and in Carnegie Hall.

The master class is open to the public. There is no charge, but donations to support the opera program are welcome. For additional details, contact Sears at (661) 654-2168.
