As you may or may not be aware, illiteracy is a growing problem in Kern County.  Over 200,000 Kern County adults cannot speak English well enough to function in everyday life, and over 150,000 adults read at or below the 4th grade level.

v      Our Mission:    To improve the quality of life for Kern County residents, by teaching adults to read, write, and speak the English language and by enabling them to become more productive members of our community.

The Kern Adult Literacy Council is a non-profit organization that has been helping Kern County residents become more literate for more than 41 years.  We do not receive any federal, state or local government funding.  We depend fully upon donations and grants.

All of our services to the residents of Kern County are free.  We match volunteer tutors with student/students in one of our programs:

v      The Adult Basic Education Program

v      The English as a Second Language Program

v      The General Educational Development Program

v      The Family Literacy Program

v      The Workplace Literacy Program

We are in desperate need of volunteer tutors.  There are over 30 students on our waiting list, who are waiting and hoping to someday be able to speak and write the English Language.  We need your help to improve the quality of life for the residents of Kern County. If you are interested in becoming a tutor please contact the Kern Adult Literacy Council 661-324-3213.
