Savory Solutions is Bakersfield's premier make-ahead meal kitchen. We do the shopping, chopping and prep work for you to quickly prepare your family meals. You come to our kitchen to make the mess and we'll clean it up for you!

On Saturday, July 26th we are hosting a Mobile Blood Drive through Houchin Blood Bank. Anyone who donates blood and orders at least 6 meals from Savory Solutions will receive a free dessert with their order!

Kern County Democrats First Wednesdays

The Kern County Democratic Party hosts a get-together the first Wednesday of each month at Dagny’s Coffee. This is no formal meeting or topic, just a chance for local Democrats and progressively-minded people to talk about the important issues of the day. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people in a county where Democrats, liberals and progressives often feel they are alone in their political leanings. With the upcoming national election in November, there is sure to be some spirited discussion.

Castle & Cooke Teams with Lake Tulloch Lions Club to Present Vintage Car Show

(COPPEROPOLIS, Calif.) – Castle & Cooke -- purveyor of high-end resort, residential communities and commercial centers -- today announces Copperopolis Town Square will host Hot Copper Days, a vintage car show sponsored by the Lake Tulloch Lions Club of Calaveras County on August 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pre-registration entry fees are $15, and $20 at the gate, day-of-admission. Awards are bestowed for first and second place in 13 car classes, with judging taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. Also awarded will be “Best in Show” and the “Copperopolis Town Square Manager’s Award,” as selected by Billie B. Community Reading Project Seeks Volunteers

How would you like to make an impact on the lives of second-grade students who are experiencing reading difficulties? You can by volunteering to tutor four students for one hour-a- week in the fall 2008 semester of the Community Reading Project.

Sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools and The Bakersfield Californian, Community Reading Project trains and places volunteer tutors to work in teams of five. This method helps students receive assistance every day of the school week.

Community Reading Project does produce results. Student reading, measured at the end of each semester of tutoring, averaged almost two years of growth per tutored pupil for the 2007-08 school year.

Volunteer training for the fall semester is required and involves only two hours. Those interested can choose between any of three training sessions on Aug. 23 from 9-11 a.m., Aug. 26 from 6-8 p.m. or Aug. 27 from 3-5 p.m., at University Square, 2000 K Street in Bakersfield. School orientation will take place on Sept. 15 from 4-6 p.m.

No pre-registration is necessary.

'Do the Math' Returns

Do the Math on TV returns for its sixth season beginning Sept. 2, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 4-5 p.m. on Bright House Networks Ch. 15 and in Eastern Kern on Charter Cable Ch. 46 and 19, as well as MediaCom Ch. 3. Certificated math teachers will be taking calls and working problems over the phone with students from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Students desiring a little extra help with their math homework can dial the Do the Math help lines, (661) 636-4357 and toll free (866) 636-6284, 3:30-5:30 p.m, to have problems solved over the phone. Some callers will have their problems worked live on TV between 4 and 5 p.m. Students can also review archives of past programs on the Internet by clicking on the Do the Math link at http://www.kern.org.

Do the Math originates from the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, where it was developed. All instruction and tutoring adheres to California Department of Education curriculum standards. The program also includes fun features and contests.
