Joe Huszti Reunion Weekend

If you were a Bakersfield College Choir member from 1959 to 1967, or sang with the California Chamber Chorale in the early Seventies, you were fortunate to work with our director, Joseph Huszti. In 1965, Joe took 48 singers on a European tour that resulted in a first-place win at the International Eistedfodd Festival in Wales. There were other honors on the trip, including audiences and performances for Pope Paul VI in Rome and for President Lyndon Johnson in Washington, D.C.

Joe moved on to the University of Delaware and to Boston College before settling in at the University of California, Irvine where he has continued to garner prizes and praise with his choral groups.

In the early Seventies, Joe made monthly trips to Bakersfield to direct the California Chamber Chorale that performed here and in Fresno and Visalia.

On Friday May 30 and Saturday May 31 Joe will be in Bakersfield to direct his Irvine choral group, Men in Blaque. A reunion with Joe has been planned for that weekend. If you would like to attend, please call Ramona Gia at 872-1480. It should be a wonderful weekend of music and remembrances.

Cesar Chavez's 40th Anniversary of the Fast

Please join us in celebrating the 40^th Anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s 1968 Fast for non-violence. The 1968 Fast was a pivotal event that defined the character and core values of the farm worker movement. Highlights include the unveiling of a new photo exhibit focused on the fast, and panel discussions led by eye witnesses of Cesar’s fast. Come and enjoy live music and food in the memorial garden.

MEDEA

The Plot: After retrieving the legendary golden fleece, Jason brings his wife Medea to settle in Corinth. There Jason falls in love with the local princess, whose status in the city will bring Jason financial security. He marries her without telling Medea. Medea takes revenge by killing the new bride and her father, the King of Corinth. Medea then purposely stabs her children to death in order to deprive Jason of all he loved (as well as heirs that
would carry on his name). She escapes to Athens with the bodies. The chorus of Corinthian women is left contemplating the will of Zeus in Medea's actions.
MEDEA has withstood the test of time to become one of the great tragedies of classical Greece.

CHARACTERS
Medea: (CAST) Barbarian, sorceress, woman of passion and rage. Clever, powerful, and ruthless, fiercely proud; a cunning and cold manipulator
Jason: Leader of the Argonauts, an opportunistic and unscrupulous man, full of self-deception and repugnant smugness.
Creon: King of Corinth. Suspicious, paranoid.
Aegeus: King of Athens. Friend of Medea. Kindly and trusting ruler.
Nurse: Servant to Medea, loyal to Medea. She is an outside commentator on the events of the play. As a slave, she is a canny but powerless observer.
Tutor: Tutor to Medea's children. Like the nurse, he comments on the behavior of his masters, although he has a different perspective on events.
Messenger: brings the news of the deaths of Creon and the Corinthian princess.
Chorus of Corinthian Women: The women of Corinth. Medea enlists their loyalty, extracting a vow of silence. They watch the horrific events unfold, but do not interfere. Though they condemn Medea at times, on the whole they seem to be more enthralled than disgusted by her. Like Medea, they are subject to the injustices that befall women; there is a part of them that seems to live vicariously through Medea's terrible revenge.

It was a dark and stormy night... The ambulance becomes disoriented in the thick Valley fog. Suddenly a kit fox family bolts across the slick pavement. Veering to miss the "oh so cute" beasts, the driver loses control of the vehicle and careens into an almond orchard! Oh no, how can this be? Is this a dream? Are you watching this horrific scene unfold? Or, are you the driver, or a patient? Confusion! BLACK OUT. You awake still confused but with a sense of urgency. You see lights, you hear action! Is it help? Who are these people? They seem so familiar. You hear voices and names. McDreamy, is it? McSteamy? Izzy? What’s an "Izzy"? It's all so unclear - so confusing. But where are you? The fog lifts. You recognize this place. There's a name, a sign. It's becoming clearer... something like Seaside, Seashells... something. No, now you see it… SEATTLE GRACE! Yes, it could be a dream or it could be real - but make no mistake YOU ARE THERE!

Benefit Car Wash for BPD Officer Eddy

Cub Scout Pack 16 is having a car wash to help BPD Officer Eddy. Officer Eddy was shot in the line of duty 4 months ago, and lost part of his leg. Pack 16 is raising money to help him and his family with unexpected and uncovered expenses.

Emergency 911 Grey's Anatomy

Welcome to a night of thrills and excitement as CASA's latest fundraiser takes guests into the halls of Seattle Grace Hospital and "Grey's Anatomy." Well, it's actually at San Joaquin Community Hospital but the theme for the night's fundraiser is the popular ABC medical drama. The event, capped at 150 guests, is $75 per person and begins at 7 p.m.

Flashing red lights, blood pumping music and feel-good fare are on tap for the evening.

Vintage Kart Racing is Back in Bakersfield

This is the re:opening of the Kart Track in Bakersfield. This track was very active in the late 50's and thru the mid 80's, all of those vintage Karts will be there this weekend. This event is sanctioned by the Vintage Karting Association, one of the few events held on the West Coast. Mr.Rusty Sanders has worked very hard to bring this Track back to her original glory and we are all looking forward to racing on this Track.. There will be many classes, Duals, Sportsmen, Juniors and even Powder Puff. If you ever raced Go Karts in your youth or wanted to, come out this Saturday or Sunday, I am sure you will enjoy it. If you have any questions or would like to participate in the first race on this vintage track, please contact me. This race will be restricted to Vintage Karts only.

Reefer Madness: The Musical!

REEFER MADNESS: THE MUSICAL

The award-winning Reefer Madness musical was inspired by the notorious -- and deliciously awful -- 1936 anti-marijuana film originally titled Tell Your Children. A smarmy lecturer arrives in a typical small town of the late '30s to warn the populace of the dangers of the "evil weed," bringing along a lurid propaganda production to dramatize his message. In broad, unsubtle, and hilarious strokes, the play-within-a-play shows how even a squeaky-clean pair of highschoolers named Mary Lane and Jimmy Harper can become hopeless dope addicts by succumbing to the lure of marijuana. Reefer Madness: The Musical is not only a savage skewering of the original black-and-white movie (some of the musical's campiest lines are taken directly from the earlier script!), but also a devastating attack on what playwrights Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney consider to be the real reason that the 1936 movie was made: to frighten the public out of their wits in order to keep them under the thumb of an oppressive government. Some memorable songs include "Romeo and Juliet,” “The Stuff,” “Down at the Ol' Five and Dime,” “Listen to Jesus Jimmy,” “Mary Jane/Mary Lane,” “The Brownie Song,” “Tell 'Em the Truth,” and the title number.

The cast includes: Alyssa Bonanno, Brian Brown, Jared Cantrell, Caroline Clark, Alex Cullen, Jessica Delcid, Diego Flores, Samantha Gonzales, Jeremiah Heitman, Jay-Ar Ignacio, Austin Jallo, Kamala Kruszka, Taylor Lozano, Paul Sosa, and Veronica Surber.
