Bakersfield Music Theatre- Stars Dinner Theatre is holding auditions for Brigadoon.

Performance Dates run through the month of July. Please come prepared to sing with a piano accompaniment, and you will be asked to dance and read a scene from the show.

AUDITIONS "Who's Got Christian Talent"

Vessels of Honor Ministries is hosting Auditions for christian talent. Those chosen will be able to showcase their talent at our outreach concert on June 21, 2008. The concert is free and will be held in the late afternoon/early evening. Time (TBA) later.

Auditions will be held on May 24th and May 31st @ Vessels of Honor Ministries @ 225 Chester Ave., Bakersfield, Ca. 93301.

Auditions for The August Production at TES
MEDEA

Auditions: Sunday, May 25, 4-6pm; Saturday, May 31, 11am-1pm
Performances: August 8 - 23, 2008
Rehearsals: 7-10pm, Sunday - Thursday beginning July 13

The Plot: After retrieving the legendary golden fleece, Jason brings his wife Medea to settle in Corinth. There Jason falls in love with the local princess, whose status in the city will bring Jason financial security. He marries her without telling Medea. Medea takes revenge by killing the new bride and her father, the King of Corinth. Medea then purposely stabs her children to death in order to deprive Jason of all he loved (as well as heirs that
would carry on his name). She escapes to Athens with the bodies. The chorus of Corinthian women is left contemplating the will of Zeus in Medea's actions.
MEDEA has withstood the test of time to become one of the great tragedies of classical Greece.

CHARACTERS
Medea: (CAST) Barbarian, sorceress, woman of passion and rage. Clever, powerful, and ruthless, fiercely proud; a cunning and cold manipulator
Jason: Leader of the Argonauts, an opportunistic and unscrupulous man, full of self-deception and repugnant smugness.
Creon: King of Corinth. Suspicious, paranoid.
Aegeus: King of Athens. Friend of Medea. Kindly and trusting ruler.
Nurse: Servant to Medea, loyal to Medea. She is an outside commentator on the events of the play. As a slave, she is a canny but powerless observer.
Tutor: Tutor to Medea's children. Like the nurse, he comments on the behavior of his masters, although he has a different perspective on events.
Messenger: brings the news of the deaths of Creon and the Corinthian princess.
Chorus of Corinthian Women: The women of Corinth. Medea enlists their loyalty, extracting a vow of silence. They watch the horrific events unfold, but do not interfere. Though they condemn Medea at times, on the whole they seem to be more enthralled than disgusted by her. Like Medea, they are subject to the injustices that befall women; there is a part of them that seems to live vicariously through Medea's terrible revenge.

Memorial Day Schedule for CALM and Kern County Museum

The California Living Museum (CALM), 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway (between Lake Ming and Hart Park) will be open, but the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Ave. in Bakersfield, will be closed for the May 26 Memorial Day holiday.

CALM will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., offering $1 off admission prices for active, reserve or retired military and children. CALM is a zoo and botanical garden housing animals which because of injury or abandonment cannot survive on their own. The Kern County Museum will be closed May 26 but will re-open May 27 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Currently under restoration at the museum is the historic J.J. Lopez House, which was recently moved from its residential site at Rosedale Highway and Calloway Drive. Lopez moved to Kern County in 1874, became a long time Tejon Ranch manager and built the house between 1906 and 1909. Ride of Silence

Join this completely silent ride in honor of those cyclists injured or killed by motorists. This ride is also to raise awareness of cyclists on the road and to let motorists know that cyclists only want to share the road with them.

Start: Town & Country Shopping Center (Gosford and Stockdale)

Time: Ride starts 7 pm SHARP

Ride: This is a slow ride suitable for all levels of riders (As long as they can maintain silence)

Helmets are required

Optional: Wear a black arm band or ribbon in support of injured or killed cyclists.

Bakersfield Swim Club Learn to Swim Grand Opening

Come and join us at our Grand Opening on May 29th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. We will have Harvey Hall and the Chamber of Commerce there to cut the ribbon. We will also have food from the Outback and Raffle Prizes. Come by and tour our new swim lesson facility!

Joe Huszti Reunion Weekend

If you were a Bakersfield College Choir member from 1959 to 1967, or sang with the California Chamber Chorale in the early Seventies, you were fortunate to work with our director, Joseph Huszti. In 1965, Joe took 48 singers on a European tour that resulted in a first-place win at the International Eistedfodd Festival in Wales. There were other honors on the trip, including audiences and performances for Pope Paul VI in Rome and for President Lyndon Johnson in Washington, D.C.

Joe moved on to the University of Delaware and to Boston College before settling in at the University of California, Irvine where he has continued to garner prizes and praise with his choral groups.

In the early Seventies, Joe made monthly trips to Bakersfield to direct the California Chamber Chorale that performed here and in Fresno and Visalia.

On Friday May 30 and Saturday May 31 Joe will be in Bakersfield to direct his Irvine choral group, Men in Blaque. A reunion with Joe has been planned for that weekend. If you would like to attend, please call Ramona Gia at 872-1480. It should be a wonderful weekend of music and remembrances.

CSUB to present social work workshop

California State University, Bakersfield’s department of social work will host a workshop by Peter De Jong, professor of sociology and social work at Calvin College, on Friday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Science III, room 104. De Jong will share his research and insights during a presentation titled “Solutions Focused Treatment in the Helping Professions.”

De Jong’s workshop will focus on integrating the solutions focused treatment after the “miracle question” has been asked.

“The ‘miracle question’ is used in counseling to help clients envision how the future will be different when their problem is no longer present,” explained Bruce Friedman, CSUB professor of social work. “The treatment focuses on what clients want to achieve by approaching the present and future rather than the past. Dr. De Jong is one of the founders of this type of treatment and we are looking forward to learning from him.”

De Jong teaches courses about social problems and has served as an individual, marital, and family counselor. He has led training sessions in solution-focused practice at both private and public mental health, family service and child welfare agencies.

The CSUB workshop qualifies licensed clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists for six continuing educations units.

Cesar Chavez's 40th Anniversary of the Fast

Please join us in celebrating the 40^th Anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s 1968 Fast for non-violence. The 1968 Fast was a pivotal event that defined the character and core values of the farm worker movement. Highlights include the unveiling of a new photo exhibit focused on the fast, and panel discussions led by eye witnesses of Cesar’s fast. Come and enjoy live music and food in the memorial garden.
