CALM is Making Mother's Day Special

Mothers and grandmothers, May 11 truly is your day at the California Living Museum (CALM), where you will be admitted for Mother’s Day at half price and have a chance to win a free CALM Family Membership, too. CALM, located between Lake Ming and Hart Park on Alfred Harrell Highway in northeast Bakersfield, will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Bring the whole family.

CALM is a combination zoo, botanical garden and natural history museum, which provides residence for native animals that because of injury or abandonment can no longer survive on their own in the wild.

The Prescription Assistance Bus Tour comes to Bakersfield! Need help getting the medicine your doctor prescribes? If you are uninsured and financially struggling, you may qualify for programs that provide free or nearly free prescription medicines. The "Help is Here Express" is free and open to the public. Equipped with computer terminals and mobile phones, people will be a ble to find out if they may be elligible for help getting prescription medicines. Specialists on board will make sure your application process is quick and easy.

‘LIVESTRONG and Never Quit’ at CSUB

Bakersfield Resident Holds Local Event on May 13 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation

WHAT:    An opportunity for California State University, Bakersfield students and alumni to educate current students about the need for cancer awareness.

CSUB alum Rudy Hernandez will support LIVESTRONG Day, the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s (LAF) one-day initiative to unite people affected by cancer and raise awareness and funds for the cancer fight.

On May 13, more than 500 LIVESTRONG Day events will take place in communities across the country to raise awareness and funds to support the fight against cancer. This is the only event taking place in Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield event will include live music, giveaways, educational resources and free food for students. The event is free and open to the public.

WHO:    Hernandez has teamed up with Associated Students, Inc. and the Student Health Center to let students know of the resources available to them on campus. Kaiser Permanente’s Health Education office will provide a registered dietician and nurse to help educate students about healthy living.

‘LIVESTRONG and Never Quit’ is sponsored by CSUB’s ASI and Student Health Center, Essentials at the Marketplace, EuroTan, In-Shape City, Subway in the Town & Country Shopping Center and Wal-Mart on White Lane.

WHY:        Unacceptable gaps exist between what we know about preventing, screening for and treating cancer and what we do. These gaps in action are responsible for 180,000 of the 560,000 lives we lose to cancer each year. United we will make cancer a national priority and end needless death and suffering from the disease.

Hernandez was diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer in April 2004 when he was 28 years old. Since undergoing surgery and chemotherapy he has dedicated his time and efforts to helping the community in raising cancer awareness.

CSUB welcomes the Heart Gallery exhibit

California State University, Bakersfield welcomes the Heart Gallery exhibit to campus with a reception Tuesday, May 13 at 5 p.m. in the Stockdale Room. Just prior to the reception, children featured in the Heart Gallery will have an opportunity to tour the CSUB campus and learn about the importance of higher education for success in life.

The Heart Gallery features photographs of children who are seeking loving, adoptive homes. The gallery includes 13 Kern County teens currently living in foster care. These children have expressed a desire to be adopted, and chose to be a part of this groundbreaking effort. The exhibit will remain on display in the CSUB Student Union through May 30.

"We're pleased to raise awareness about adoption on campus and throughout the community," said Bruce Friedman, professor of social work. "Our social work program works closely with the department of human services and initiatives, such as the Heart Gallery, provide our students with practical experiences."

Now in its second year, the Heart Gallery has been successful in helping children find "forever families." Three children have finalized adoptions through the local exhibit, with several more children on the path to adoption.
