By Chris Thompson

www.altasierra.com

It’s not surprising that many Bakersfield residents take weekend trips to play in the peaceful white snow. But what you may not know is exactly where they’re going. From skiing and snowboarding to tubing and the always kid-friendly snowball fi ght, this winter is going to be full of chilly fun all right here in Kern County.

It’s not far away at all. Just a few minutes past Lake Isabella and Kernville is all it takes. Winter adventure seekers will find the 58-mile drive to the snow is much shorter than a trip out of Kern County.

Yes, the southern San Joaquin Valley does have its own ski and snowboard resort, albeit not in the valley, but in the surrounding mountains at Alta Sierra. Making this local chill zone even better is the fact that it is owned and operated by local businessmen who are looking to continue bringing family fun in the snow to local residents.

Shirley Meadows began operation in the 1980s and was purchased by a group of Bakersfield-based business people in 2003. A few years later the resort was renamed Alta Sierra at Shirley Meadows to reflect the new owners’ passion for keeping winter sports alive in the San Joaquin Valley.

But for many fun seekers visiting on a busy winter weekend, the fun is an all-day experience.

“It doesn’t take long to get there,” says 14- year-old Victoria Jeffers, who learned to snowboard last year at Alta Sierra. “I like being able to

Try new things on my board and not have to worry about being run over by better riders.” Although a bit smaller than some other California ski destinations, Alta Sierra offers a warm, family atmosphere and the opportunity to experience winter escapes close to home. Additionally, the value of this local resort brings savings that are a welcome relief to winter sports enthusiasts during hard economic times. Adult lift tickets are $35 while a junior pass is $27.

“The value of Alta Sierra is certainly helpful to families that are looking to enjoy the snow together,” says Dave Maynard, member of the eight-person local ownership group. “We see families come up here, enjoy the day and take in dinner at Cheryl’s Diner in Kernville before heading home.” All of this together saves money over a long distance trip to some of the other California locations.

The resort boasts a 400-foot vertical drop at the summit’s high point of 7,100 feet.

With two double-chair lifts, skiers and snowboarders have access to eight runs that offer skill levels from beginner to advanced.

“The misconception is that we are a smaller resort and we don’t have runs for the experienced skier. Our black diamond runs are steep and have plenty of challenging options for those ready to take full advantage of the mountain,” Maynard says.

And it’s more than just the experienced skiers and snowboarders who take in this winter playground. The kids get in on the action even if they have never been on a board or skis. The return of the classic inner tube takes front and center in this one-of-a-kind local attraction.

The tube park is the first of its kind in Kern County allowing tubing without the burden of climbing back up the hill. “The automated lift will hook onto your tube as you sit inside and are gently pulled back to the top of the hill. There is no need to climb; we’ll do that for you,” says Maynard. You don’t even need to bring your own equipment, as a $15 ticket will provide a tube and hours of fun.

In the years that the new ownership group has been working at Alta Sierra, they have strived to improve the equipment available for rent. “We have some really nice skis and snowboards to rent. The quality is just as good as those you could buy,” he continues.

The big news this year at Alta Sierra is the new opportunity to make snow. “We are very excited,” Maynard explains. “We’ve been working on the snowmaking system for a few years and now we are ready to go live.

This means that we will be open for Christmas break, weather permitting, and should

Be able to stay open through the end of March. Being able to make our own snow is a big asset to the resort.” Every ski resort has some sort of sitting area and Alta Sierra is no different. The Warming Hut has outdoor tables and an indoor area for those who may have come to just watch. “We’ll have many people in the Warming Hut all day long, sitting by the fire and playing card games as the kids are on their boards. It truly is a family atmosphere,” Maynard says.

“When I first tried to snowboard, I wasn’t any good,” says Jeffers. “I had a lesson with one of the instructors last year and really got the hang of my board. I can’t do any tricks or jumps, but it is a lot of fun and I can’t wait until they open this year. I’m ready to go back.

...

My friend (Henry Gonzales) has enjoyed nature and taking pictures of nature for the last thirty years. One day while getting ready to take some pictures of humming birds feeding while flying, Henry's wife (Alma) came out from cleaning the garage & hands him a shotgun shell and two tire gauges, so he puts them in a outside pocket of his camera case so he could dispose of them later. That was about six years ago, I have told you that story so I could tell you this story. Henry's wife (Alma) wanted him to go to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, a town featured in the movie, Shaw Shank Redemption. Henry is not one that enjoys travel as his job as an Insurance adjuster kept him on the road for years, but in deference to his wife and sister-in-law, he went. They flew out of LAX to a Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Airport. I must also tell you, that this will be the first time Henry has ever been on an airplane. So there they are,on the plane, in the air and on the way to Zihuatanejo. When they level out Henry asks Alma to change seats with him so he could take some pictures out of the window. In the process of changing seats, he noticed a shotgun shell and something metalic. He never thought of not saying anything, he immediately called the Flight Attendant and advised her of what he found. By her reaction it seemed like no big deal, and that seemed true until they landed, then the Captain tells everyone to remain seated because the Federales want to check the plane. That's when the interrogation starts. Everyone has to stay in the airplane except Henry and Alma. They take them to an isolated room and the Federales began to appear out of nowhere, armed with automatic weapons strapped to there sides and in their hands, it would have made the Terminator jealous. They began to grill Henry, telling him that this is not America, this is Mexico and you are not allowed carry shotgun shells! He told them it was not his, & that it was in the seat, he just reported it. Now they search everybody again, scan all of their luggage again, there were thirteen family members in all. Then they grab Henry's camera case and what falls out? Another tire Gauge! It wasn't until this moment that Henry remembered that shotgun shell of six years ago, Henry said, it was to late to confess, it would have only made the situation worse and by now Alma was crying. Henry said, why they did not catch this at LAX, I don't know, all LAX questioned me about was how big my tube of toothpaste was, I should have told them that it was just a little bigger than my shotgun shell but shorter than my tire gauges. Anyway they finally let them go with a stern warning not to bring any more shotgun shells or tire gages to Mexico. Henry was going to point out that the gauges were made in Mexico but he said, Alma stopped him. They asked him where he going to stay and when he was leaving so, he said , he could not completely relax. Henry thought that at any time they could bust in and shake him down or worse, he also thought that he might be given a bad time when it was time to leave. They had already made it clear that this was not America. But, Henry said I did stay, thanks to my wife, and I did enjoy the scenery and being with my family and I got some great pictures, take a look...

Finally, fall is here. After the hot temperatures of Bakersfield’s famed summer season, fall gives us a breather between the heat and the cold. Not all years are likely to see a fall, at least not around here. The running joke of Bakersfield having two seasons is one that locals become all too familiar with.

Luckily, there is the opportunity to escape, for a while at least. Two destinations that locals have come to call their “home away from home,” are Monterey and Napa Valley. While both areas have an abundance of things to do and places to dine, there are a few things that make those two areas special this time of year.

There are some staple attractions in Monterey – the aquarium, Cannery Row and the scenic Lover’s Point. But here are some offbeat unpublicized adventures waiting for your free time to discover. When you’re in Monterey, check out the Moonlight Tours at Point Sur lighthouse. It’s a surreal hike under a star-studded sky that leads visitors to a wonderful lighthouse and other facilities built in 1887-89. This tour ends in October so there’s only a short time to get over there. The Ghost Walk of Old Monterey unlocks the “other side” with an evening tour through downtown’s haunted hotels and buildings with a historic bent (www.montereyghostwalk.com).

The question of where to stay always comes up when traveling. In Monterey, the off-season is a ripe time to lock in a room rate for well under $125/night. Key finds include Casa Munrus, Las Laureles Lodge, Carmel River Inn, Sandpiper Inn by the Sea and Carmel Inn and Suites. Historic properties are another venue to discover: Carmel's La Playa Hotel (1904) is recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation; quirky Deetjen's Inn in Big Sur is on the National Register of Historic Places and The Monterey Hotel has been a stately fixture of Alvarado Street since 1904.

A little knowledge to keep in the back of your mind for future visits to the area – five new hotel properties are slated for development including a 330-room Fairmont resort on the grounds of the former Ford Ord in Seaside. The $100 million property will include 24,000 square feet of meeting space, a 14,000square foot Willow Stream spa, magnificent Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses, pool and 295 residential units with a 2009 completion date. Pacific Hotels Management is breaking ground on a new Cannery Row hotel property set to open in spring 2008. The more than $80 million, 200-room beachfront hotel will include 20,000 square foot of upscale retail space, meeting facilities and a 95-seat restaurant. Additional projects include mid-size hotels in Marina, Salinas and Seaside due to top off in advance of the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

While fall is starting to turn into winter, Yountville has a special way to welcome the holiday season. This cozy, wine-country getaway is off the beaten path of the usual Napa wine trek. Starting November 23, Yountville will be celebrating the holiday season with its 19th annual Festival of Lights. Like a scene from a holiday film, Yountville comes to life with a procession of thousands of twinkling lights transcending the town into a show-stopping winter wonderland complete with carolers, elves, horse-drawn carriage rides and a visit from the Big Guy in Red.

Yountville’s annual holiday celebration is a magnet for visitors seeking the real deal. The town’s charming European ambiance mixed with a classic California wine country beat is a perfect ticket for urbanites seeking an escape from the hectic shopping season. Throughout December carriage rides (weekends), late-night shopping and festive events round out the seasonal salute. Key wine stops include Cliff Lede Vineyards, Domaine Chandon, Goosecross Cellars, Bell Wine Cellars and newcomers Tamber Bey, Keever Vineyards, Kapcsandy Family Winery, Gemstone and Chanticleer.

Up The River and Through The Woods

Can it really be called travel if the destination lies only 50 miles outside of Bakersfield? If you follow the Kern River up Highway 178, you will find another world, the old western town of Kernville, which surprisingly doesn’t require a passport. This town is a gem just five miles north of Lake Isabella, and was at one time the largest center of culture and commerce in Kern County.
Walking down the streets of Kernville is like walking onto a John Wayne movie set, with some modern updates. The storefronts are covered and wooden, with carved signs: “Barbershop,” “Kernville Saloon,” “Post Office.” The town remains in an era when cities were created with each profession sitting side-by-side: the doctor, the dentist and the general store.
Most locals find their way to Kernville by way of white water rafting or boating in Lake Isabella, and those who treasure the town make it their main destination. Inns and bed-and-breakfasts with scenic views of the river are situated throughout the area.
If you enjoy the great outdoors, then camp, because campsites are plentiful, and it is the quintessential American vacation. The French Gulch and Hungry Gulch campgrounds are popular sites to pitch a tent, but be certain to make reservations because on any given Friday afternoon, campers roll in and spaces become scarce. September and October can be considered ideal months for camping in the area because days are warm enough for water activities, and evenings are cool enough to warrant a campfire. If you want to take a break from “roughing it,” a visit to the Kern Valley Golf Course, antique stores, cafes and museums could be points of interest for you.
“The museum-going people are pleasantly surprised to step into the Kernville Museum, because it is about the Old West, and you can’t get that many other places,” says Ron Bolyard, president of the museum. They average 1,200 visitors a month, drawing a large number from the Netherlands, among many other countries. The museum was established in 1969, and is filled entirely with donated pieces, most of them everyday tools from the 19th century to better educate the visitor about life in the early mining period. Outside is a stagecoach and an original covered wagon. Twice a month, weather permitting, the museum shows old movies and serves popcorn outside for free. Recently, the featured movie was “Stagecoach,” starring John Wayne.
“Nuui Cunni” or “our house” is the name of the nearby Indian cultural center including a museum, library, and 5.5 acres of native plants. Outside are recreated traditional structures like a tule hut and sweat lodge. The open spaces are used for a variety of social gatherings.
Fishing is particularly popular, as the upper Kern River is the birthplace of the golden trout, a fish that now inhabits many high altitude regions in the world after breeding them. Fly fishing conditions are especially good in the Kern River just above Kernville, with plenty of placid spots to cast a line. In town at the general store, you can ask the locals about some of the prime places to fish, because that’s just the kind of town Kernville is – friendly.
The Pigsty is a friendly place to get a great hot breakfast. For lunch, there are many delis on Main Street and cool covered porches to relax on. From here, the pace of life on Main Street is just right. Many antique stores line the main drag. One of the most trafficked is Kernville Antiques and Gifts, which sells a mix of Kernville souvenirs, Native American artifacts, and old western pieces.
For a cool evening in Kernville, the Kern River Brewery is the place to be. After a long day on the river, nothing tastes quite like locally brewed ale. On tap are four: Isabella Blonde, Sequoia Red, Just Outstanding IPA, and Class V Stout, named after the classes of river that rafters and kayakers designate (Class V is the roughest). This is also a nod to one of the brewery’s founders, Rebecca Giddens, a local world-class kayaker and 2004 silver Olympic medalist in kayaking. The menu is also superb, the Kern Burger coming highly recommended with special Class V Stout mustard made in the brewery. Or, if it coincides with your plans, go to Taco Tuesday, with a special on beef tacos and beer. This brewery really does seem to be a place where everybody knows your name, unless of course, you are visiting. But with a couple more trips up to Kernville under your belt, those rights can be yours, too.

TRAIL OF 100 GIANTS
Giants are usually thought of as mythical creatures found only in childhood fairytales. Well, think again. The Sequoia National Forest, located less than 100 miles from Bakersfield, is home to the Trail of 100 Giants. This national monument inside the forest is an easy and fun walk through Long Meadow Grove. Some of these magnificent trees are estimated to be up to 1,500 years old. Located on the Western Divide Highway (Highway 107), facilities include a paved parking area, restrooms, picnic area and campground nearby. A $5 vehicle fee is charged to help maintain and improve these facilities.

Sophisticated. Modern. Edgy. Fresh. The Hotel Angeleno is the kind of destination that breaks down any preconceived notions one may harbor when thinking of a hotel conveniently located next to a freeway exit. Located on the West side of the 405 Freeway, specifically where Sunset Boulevard and the 405 meet, The Hotel Angeleno, which was once a Holiday Inn Select, stands bold and tall. As the former Holiday Inn, the building was in desperate need of a makeover, inside and out. Luckily, GH Capital LLC, a national real estate developer, and Joie de Vivre Hospitality, a creative collection of lifestyle businesses, stepped in and gave the building a whole new persona. The company says its businesses are differentiated not only by their compelling design but also by their ability to establish an emotional connection with guests by catering to their psychographic rather than demographic profile. This can be seen by Angeleno’s modern exterior and interior by Jofusion Inc.
As the largest boutique hotel operator in California, Joie de Vivre currently accommodates over 600,000 room nights per year. Its portfolio includes 30 hotels, eight restaurants and bars, and three day spas.
Angeleno is home to 209 guest rooms on 16 floors, each with a balcony overlooking Brentwood. The property is crafted in a circular, Modern Era design adding extra charm to the balcony-panoramic views. Hotel Angeleno is also the closest hotel to the Getty Center and just one-half-mile from UCLA – perfect for parents visiting their scholastic students. All rooms are non-smoking and pet-free.
Angeleno is the kind of hotel you would expect to find in a swanky city like Los Angeles. Uniquely hip and on the cutting edge of comfort and design, this property is under a year old and has already been turning many heads. After the six-month multi-million-dollar renovation process, the property is willing to make your stay unforgettable. Angeleno has LA-ready GPS systems available for rent as well as an iPod Exchange, which allows guests to check out iPods preloaded with various music play lists and podcasts. Guests are also encouraged to be pampered at the hotel by “Angeleno Beauty,” a full-service mobile spa that offers guests in-room and poolside personal makeovers, beauty treatments and expert advice. Perhaps the most exciting perk of Hotel Angeleno is the property’s car service. A luxurious Cadillac Escalade ready to shuttle you anywhere within a three-mile-radius, perfect for visiting the Getty Center and not having to pay for parking.
When you’re lucky enough to find a hotel that can elegantly blend striking design with a relaxed ambiance, to create a new kind of casual luxury – you’d be foolish not to want to soak up the experience.
Lobbies say a lot about a hotel, and Angeleno’s speaks volumes. The lobby is adorned with the hotel’s striking design-color scheme of rich chocolate browns, rustic oranges, inspired natural woods and of course eclectic pieces of wall art. A hallway away, Angeleno hosts a convenient café-style store where coffee and pastries make the small room more inviting than some restaurants. Still, it’s the hotel’s outside pool and casual lounge area that really captures the ground-level show. The property’s pool is perfect for hanging out in the summer and its accompanying outdoor lounge area is complete with an inviting fireplace. The perfect place for uninhibited conversations fueled by a glass of your favorite wine, Angeleno’s charm is evident with every corner turned.

WEST
If you have ever visited Seattle and dined inside the Space Needle then you are familiar with the adventurous and possibly romantic feel of “sitting on top of the world.” Angeleno’s WEST restaurant and lounge captures the same excitement overlooking pieces of Los Angeles County with floor to ceiling window panels. WEST features an Italian steakhouse menu showcasing prime aged steaks, chops and roasts with traditional pastas and small plates. The talented Executive Chef Josh Moulton offers a unique selection of in-house-made crudo (think “Italian sashimi”). The innovative wine program presents “quartinos” of a variety of Italian and California wines. With a high-rise option like this, there’s no reason to have to leave the comfort of Angeleno. WEST also features a fully stocked bar perfect for before-dinner cocktails or maybe a before-bed nightcap. Highly recommended is the Pomegranate Martini. But when it comes to preparing the best meal possible, Chef Moulton follows the mantra of “keep it simple, allow the food to sing on the plate.”
“I want our guests to be thinking about their meal the next day,” says Chef Moulton. Popular dishes like Steak Fiorentina, Dungeness crab and Maine lobster Bolognese, and Dijon crusted rack of lamb and spicy sausage risotto combined with memorable wine pairings are certain to make your WEST experience something to tell your friends.

Fun Away From Your Room
As much as we would like to keep you inside Angeleno for the majority of your stay, we know you’d like to get out and see the sights. So here are a few cultural experiences we think you should visit:

1. The Getty Center: The J. Paul Getty Museum collects in seven distinct areas including: Greek and Roman antiquities, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts, and European and American photographs. Its mission is to explore the connections between four thousand years of Jewish heritage and the vitality of American democratic ideals.
Waking up to an overcast sky can be very depressing for some. In fact, you may want to throw the covers over your head and not get out of bed. However, when you’re waking up to wispy gray clouds while visiting Northstar-At-Tahoe Resort, depression is far from any emotion you’ll be feeling. With pillows of freshly fallen snow resting on your window ledge, evergreens and the rest of nature, a warm fire flickering in your fireplace and a Starbucks just a stone’s throw from your luxurious condo at Northstar’s Village, a perfect scene for the perfect winter getaway is set.

  The Village
The Village at Northstar is a breathtaking sight. Its magnificent architecture, towering above the snow-covered ground in the winter while illuminated by the warm glow of soft light, is a vision of serenity. This month, The Village celebrates its first year of being open. Phase One of The Village features comfortable condo style living for a quick weekend getaway or longer. While staying at Northstar, you could quite possibly forget that you’re not at home. Each condo features two or more bedrooms, and a spacious, fully stocked kitchen.
The first phase of The Village at Northstar includes three buildings and 60,000 feet of commercial space featuring clothing stores specializing in skiing and snow boarding apparel.
Some of the fashionable brand names found within The Village include: The North Face, which sells quality and durable clothing for all sorts of outdoor activities; Butterbox, which features hip-urban influenced styles which generally bring in the younger boarders. But some of the most unique shops aren’t all that flashy. The modern and sleek styles of Helly Hansen, a company that is known worldwide for quality and endurance has excellent clothing at even more outstanding prices. If you’re not looking for snow apparel you’ll want to browse through the many gift and accessory shops in The Village.
After a full day of shopping, activities and sightseeing you’ll be resting inside either Iron Horse North or South, each housing 72 condominiums – all part of Phase One. Also available is the Great Bear Lodge, which includes 28 luxurious condominiums.
Guests of the resort will also find enjoyment centered around the Village Plaza, home to live music, ice-skating and a nice variety of restaurants and cafes. Northstar isn’t just a place to have fun; it’s a way of life.
Continued on page 20

And don’t think we forgot to feed you. Northstar’s Village has cafes and eateries such as the fine dining found at Timbercreek Restaurant and Bar, the hunger-hitting Big Wave Burritos and Wraps and of course world famous Starbucks. But if a comfortable take home deli-style meal in the comfort of your condominium sounds like the perfect solution to the end of an active day, try stopping by Earthly Delights Deli. This deli is a favorite among guests and locals. It features deli-style foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while also carrying high-end products and sundries. It even has a nice selection of wines – and everything is healthy.
Currently while you’re visiting, you can’t help but notice the daytime construction of Phase Two which will include an additional 93 condominiums and 40,000 square feet of retail space. If all goes as planned this new addition will be open by spring 2007.
You might even be surprised after logging on to www.northstarattahoe.com for some fascinating specials, which combine accommodations with skiing or boarding lessons, and shopping too. So what are you waiting for? Check it out now.

Northstar Tidbits
Check this out. Northstar is preparing for a new high-end property — The Ritz-Carlton Highlands, Lake Tahoe broke ground in summer 2006. This $300 million resort will be Lake Tahoe’s first five-star luxury hotel and will include 173 rooms, a world-class spa, several pools, and on-site meeting and event space. These amenities will be connected by a new gondola to the Village at Northstar condominium residences, shops, restaurants and ice rink. The property will be located mid-mountain at The Highlands, a new on-mountain residential community set amidst Northstar Resort. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2009.
While the snow has covered much of the vegetation, Northstar is still Green.
The resort maintains its award-winning environmental reputation with the continued development of the Village at Northstar located at the base of the mountain. A former ‘WRAP of the Year’ (Waste Reduction Awards Program) and NSAA Silver Eagle award winner, the resort continues its environmental commitment by teaming with East West Partners, also a WRAP award recipient, to create the first ‘Green Village’ at a U.S. ski resort. Northstar Resort and East West Partners have constructed the new Village at Northstar using guidelines of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system established by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED certification is a coveted designation and one that Northstar Resort and East West Partners are proud to achieve.
It’s easy getting lost in the winter wonderland that can be found at Northstar, and after your first visit you’ll be ready to plan your return. Hopefully each time you drink a warm cup of coffee or cocoa in the morning you’ll be instantly whisked away to fond
                         Continued on page 22
memories of Northstar. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family or creating a special romantic getaway, slipping away into the ease of living at Northstar will be a decision you’ll be glad you made.
Cutting Through The Slopes
By Ginny Cowenhoven

Logger’s Loop is the Northstar’s longest run measuring 1.3 miles. Since January 2001, the mountain has opened 13 advanced runs on the back side. The average annual snowfall is 350 inches and the average daytime temperature from November to April is 43 degrees. At night, the average temperature is 21 degrees.
New to the mountain this year is the new 6-pack express lift and Tahoe Zephyr Express, a bigger snowmaking system. Northstar is proud to say it has the largest snowmaking system of any resort on the North Shore. Although it’s cold outside, and your face is freezing, don’t think you can’t get sunburned. It’s a good thing some of the ski shops on site sell sunblock brands you can count on. Beyond Coastal offers all-natural sun care products available in Active Daily SPF 30, Daily Sun Care SPF 15 and Z-Cote® Lip Balm SPF 15. Beyond Coastal hopes that their products’ affordable price for its high value ingredients will make it accessible to everyone and help change the perception of healthy skin.
The mountain boasts various levels of terrain on its 79 trails with the longest trail running 1.3 miles. There are six different mountains for the various level skier or rider. Mt. Pluto is known for its groomed runs and views of Lake Tahoe. The terrain park hosts rails, boxes and jibs for those interested in freestyle skiing. The back side consists of seven one mile runs for the advanced. Lookout Mountain also consists of advanced terrain with its fabulous views of the valley. The Northwest Territory is ideal for low intermediates and is a great spot for training while the Village area at the lower part of the mountain is useful to the beginner. In addition to the downhill terrain, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also available.
If you’ve got an adventurous spirit or just know what you’re doing, Northstar’s Parks and Pipes are where you should spend your time when visiting. Expertly crafted freestyle terrain can be found loaded with an assortment of jumps, hips, rails and boxes along with a 420-foot super pipe, which has been ranked in TransWorld Snowboarding’s top ten half pipes in North America for the past three years. The resort is also excited to announce the newest addition to our mountain, The Stash. The Stash is a new kind of run developed by Jake Burton, Burton team riders and Snow Park Technologies. The first run of its kind, it is a place where riders can progress their all-mountain skills in a fun, natural environment that features tree runs, road jumps and jibs all constructed with wood logs and other natural materials.
Now if you’re new to snow sports or are adventuring into your first time, don’t worry, Northstar has you covered. On-site lessons for beginners are available through child or adult snow school. If you’re a little bit on the shy side you might want to check into private lessons.

Not directly off the 101 Highway, Morro Bay could quite easily be the Central Coast’s best-kept secret. Two things generally come to mind when you mention Morro Bay. First, the towering rock, iconic of the quaint town and second, the three smoke stacks that can be seen from miles away. However, very seldom do you hear about the untouched beauty of the bay and the adventures that can be found.
From full day deep sea fishing trips, to a stroll down The Embarcadero, where you’ll find an eclectic array of shops and an aquarium filled with barking seals waiting for you to toss them small pieces of fish, Morro Bay is the quintessential depiction of relaxation.
If that’s the type of getaway you have in mind, then why not take your vacation a step further and find yourself blissfully enjoying “me time” inside Morro Bay’s national state park, where a great round of golf or the majestic Inn at Morro Bay can deliver you from the mundane.

One Onboard Nautical Events
Chef Leonard Gentieu isn’t sitting around a table talking about his dreams or future possibilities; he’s living them now. After creating a successful career as a well-established chef, Gentieu retired as many hard workers eventually do. However, as he sat in retirement he decided it was time to jump ship and embark on an adventure that had been nestled deep within his soul since his childhood.
Before we explore Chef Gentieu’s most recent nautical adventures, let’s show you where he came from. While some people have a knack for building, painting or even writing, Gentieu has a way with food. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York, Gentieu currently resides in Cambria, California. Gentieu spent a good portion of his career in Kern County where he worked for the Bakersfield Country Club, the Petroleum Club and the former Maison Jaussaud. He even owned restaurants in the Taft and Maricopa areas. But that’s not where his passion lay, he longed to be on the sea – and the sea is where he was destined to be.
“It’s funny really,” he says. “When I was younger all of my friends would be reading comic books and I would be sitting down with them reading magazines on yachts and different boats. I knew back then I wanted one of my own. Now, it’s a dream come true.”
Owner of the Papagallo II, and One Onboard Nautical Events, Gentieu has taken his extravagant culinary talents out onto the waters of Morro Bay by creating an on-the-water experience so magnificent words cannot describe it.
Gentieu knew taking his retirement and investing it into something could be risky, but not if the risk was something he and his loving wife, Midge, could both agree on. After looking at over 4,000 boats on the Internet and traveling to eight different cities, the pair found the lovely Papagallo II, afloat in San Francisco.
“This is a great story,” Gentieu says with a boastful laugh, “We had a very, very smart broker. As we were sailing on the Papagallo he opened up a bottle of champagne. The sun was out and we were gliding beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. This was the perfect moment. Then Midge looked over at me and said I think this is something we should do.”
That was October of 2005 and by the next month the Papagallo II was resting in her new home inside Morro Bay’s harbor just waiting to set sail for any event deemed special enough to celebrate as Gentieu says.
“If you have an event that is positively, absolutely special then it should happen right here on this boat,” he says.
From weddings, to corporate parties to memorial services Papagallo has had close to 2,000 people on board for over 75 different occasions. The magic of this yacht is miraculous. As the business begins to blossom even more, the opportunities to experience that magic are expanding. Whether you want to book the yacht for a private function, jump on board for an open-to-the-public event, or have the boat exclusively to yourself for a chartered trip to The Channel Islands or even Catalina Island and an overnight-onboard stay, the Papagallo II is your best bet for high quality and sophistication.
Gentieu says he is making the best food he has ever made throughout his entire career because he is where he is supposed to be.
Dishes such as the fabulous main course favorite: Petite Filet Mignon with a Port Wine reduction and bleu cheese served with a large stuffed prawn with Alaskan Leg Crab Meat cooked in a light lemon butter is just the tip of what can be experienced onboard.
“Sure I have a Culinary degree, but I learned so much during my time in Bakersfield and Taft,” he says. “Those places and experiences have made me who I am today. When you get to a certain age, after a while, people start to play it safe. They only dream of what they ‘could have done’ or ‘should have done.’ Not me, I’m doing it and I hope I’m making people happy along the way. I hope people walk off the yacht and just can’t stop smiling. I know this yacht is my personal escape.”

The Inn at Morro Bay
Whether you have a view of the tranquil bay or not, there is no “bad” view at The Inn at Morro Bay. Situated at the edge of Morro Bay State Park, The Inn is a luxurious 98-roomed, full-service property that will take your breath away.
Perhaps that is why it’s referred to as Nature’s Coastal Hideaway.
From the balcony of your comfortable, seaside cottage inspired room, Morro Bay’s beauty is almost hard to believe. As you sit in your soft-tub hot tub, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine, you can’t help but take a deep breath in and out – rest and relaxation never felt this good. A premier destination for a romantic getaway, the Inn at Morro Bay is sure to light any romantic fire. However, its magic doesn’t have to end at romance; The Inn is also a great place for families too. Its quiet nature allows for real bonding time between relatives and nature.
Next door to The Inn, visitors can wander by the Morro Bay Estuary Natural Preserve on their way to the Museum of Natural History. On the other hand, if a round of golf is what you had in mind, then all you’ll have to do is look across the street from The Inn. The 18-hole course has a great view of the state park’s ongoing activities and the bay. It was designed in 1928 and was included as part of the state park in 1934, a gem not to be overlooked when visiting.
As the sun sets, the bay glistens like a thousand stars dancing on a blue blanket. Enjoying a delectable meal from The Inn at Morro Bay’s Orchid restaurant is the perfect way to soak in this gorgeous sight. Made to order, the restaurant’s cuisine showcases the natural gems of the sea as well as some land delicacies. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list of imported and local beauties. Whether you want to enjoy a full bottle, half bottle or single glass, no choice from the list would be a bad one. Although guests may want to wander over to the restaurant as hunger creeps upon them, it is best to make reservations, as the hotel’s restaurant is open to anyone. Highly recommended is the Nut Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna. It simply sends your taste buds to another planet. And what’s a divine meal without a little dessert – the signature Orchid Seed Crème Brulee is the perfect creamy treat to end a fantastic dining experience.
Highlights/Adventures
You never really get a good sense of a place until you find yourself immersed smack in the middle of where you are. Many visitors may find themselves walking up and down the Embarcadero shopping for souvenirs, eating at some excellent restaurants or browsing through gorgeous art galleries, but if you truly want to see the essence of Morro Bay, get out onto the water. While boats are fun and fascinating, kayaking is perhaps the best way to be one with your surroundings. These vessels allow you to not only glide across the dynamic Bay waters, but they are also the only way from within the Bay you can travel to the sand bank, a divide between the harbor’s calm waters and the open sea. The sand bank is not only a piece of untouched beauty, it is also a roped-off preserve for one of nature’s sweetest and nearly extinct birds, the Snowy Plover.
When traveling across the Bay, you want to go with a company that is going to be able to tell you the ins and outs of the area, the types of animals and birds that inhabit the area and knows how to read the tides – you want to go out with Kayak Horizons. But if kayaking isn’t your thing, stop by the business anyway – their friendly and knowledgeable staff is willing to tell you everything you’ll ever want to know about Morro Bay’s history on and off the water.
As you glide across the top of the water, remember to look around. Absorb the Bay’s beauty. And although there may be no place like home – there’s no place like the ocean.

Let’s face it, before the William M. Thomas Air Terminal was built at Meadows Field, many of us have picked up friends, family (or worse, business associates) who had never laid eyes on Bakersfield and we quietly cringed when we realized their first impression of our town was the tiny, out-dated, hokey, old airport.
The embarrassment grew when we had to wait for their baggage outside in 104-degree heat on the cold war-era conveyor belt.
And if you were traveling and had to use the bathroom once inside the secured waiting area?
Too bad, you’d have to hold it.
There were no bathrooms there.
The terminal was 50 years old, when she was retired.
She showed her age. She was far past a mere facelift.
Luckily for all of Kern County our local leaders must have had similar feelings because they managed to gather $36 million for the new William Thomas Terminal, which opened February 27, 2006.
So here we are, seven months later.
Was it worth it?
Traveler Kim Coleman of Bakersfield, who was picking up her bags at the baggage claim inside the new terminal says yes.
“It’s beautiful, gorgeous. It makes me feel good about Bakersfield,” she said.
“I think it’s fantastic, it’s a major, major upgrade for me,” said her husband Jorgen who was picking her up.
In case you have not been inside, the spacious waiting area is surrounded by sky-high windows, and speckled with modern, comfortable chairs along with tables so people can pull out their laptops using the terminal’s wireless internet access.
To the south is a separate area for baggage claim and car rentals from four companies. To the north is a separate ticketing area. To the west, the secured passengers-only area, and a hallway to a spacious waiting area where the gates are.
“I think for the most part the public is happy with the convenience of the building, that there is food service beyond the security checkpoint. The fact that we have restrooms beyond the security checkpoint is huge,” Teresa Hitchcock, Analysis and Marketing Manager of Kern County Airports says, adding that before people often waited until the last minute to enter the secured area because of the lack of bathrooms.
Something else that’s new? Beer and wine. Once ticketed passengers get beyond the secured checkpoint Blimpies can serve you a club sandwich, and a glass of beer to wash down those pre-flight jitters.
And it is not uncommon to see a good part of passengers in that area doing just that, even at noon on a Sunday.
However some, like Jorgen Coleman would like to see a restaurant that serves alcohol outside of the secured area.
“So people can have a cold beer while they are waiting for their friends to come in,” he said.
                                                  Continued on page 30
Robert Yoon, who runs Omni Goods in the non-secured area, says he does not know if he will be able to add beer and wine to the list of coffee, snacks and souvenirs he currently sells.
But what will be coming to further soothe waiting passengers and others is more art.
Next time you are in the terminal, take a look around. The walls and ceilings are speckled with hand-picked works from local artists, although artists from all over the county submitted their work to be displayed, says Jill Egland, Director of Special Projects for the Arts Council of Kern.
“We will continue to have art here but it was important that the first round of art be local,” she said, adding that it was the local voice that was most important.
Egland echoes the word of one of the local artist whose work is displayed at the terminal.
“She said ‘through this work let’s remind ourselves and visitors of what we hold special.’”
While many larger airports have budgets for art, Kern County does not. So the Arts Council of Kern raised $250,000 from donations to purchase the paintings, sculptures and photographs on, or to be on, display. The artwork currently displayed is a bronze and steel sculpture called “Up in the Air: Junior Birdsman,” by Fresno artist Dorothy Ralph Gager, the “Landscape Heritage Project” by Gita Lloyd of Bakersfield which is a mural of four large local landscapes and in the ticketing area you will find Bakersfield artist Chalita Robinson’s “Risen Jewel” which is wings made of gold leaf and shattered glass.
Some works still to be displayed by Bakersfield artists are Joyce Kohl’s mobile of “Airplanes of the World” in different media. Photographer Greg Iger will have his photos of the Kern River mounted on tile and displayed in the departure area. In the unsecured area, we will get to see Bob Gardner’s paintings of Kern County icons, and outside, in front of the terminal, Thomas Zachary will create a water fountain featuring a motif of the world.
Inside there are plans to display a wall of art by children, which is being sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
And Egland says there is still much to do here in the way of art.
“There are plans in the future for there to be a gallery of local artists,” she says.
And according to Hitchcock, people are not just taking to the new airport, but even more are taking off from it.
There are now 34 daily flights, 17 in and 17 out, to six destinations: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Houston.
There are four airlines: Continental, Delta, United and U.S. Airways (formerly America West).
Roland Williams of Sausalito needs to travel to Bakersfield periodically, but he has never flown, until now.
“Six or seven months ago the only way to fly here (from San Francisco) was to go to L.A. and change planes. It was quicker to drive from San Francisco to here than it was to fly,” he says.
So what does Williams think of the new airport?
“I was noticing you have a lot of light and that’s very important because airports can seem like dungeons,” he said, adding that it’s also very clean.
Williams says from now on, he’s flying to Bakersfield.
So are many others. In fact, Hitchcock says most of the flights are full. Last year Meadows Field had about 291,000 passengers. So far this year there have been about 232,000 passengers, with four months left to go.
This does present downsides for travelers: It can be harder to get the flight you need, and it could cost you more.
“That’s a real issue. A lot of flights are full and it’s driving up prices, so that is why we are trying to gain more service,” she said, adding that those new flights could come next year.
“Denver is our biggest destination that we don’t have service to so that’s why we are pushing for Denver service,” she said.
In the meantime she has some tips for getting the best local flight deals. Do multiple searches on the Internet such as Orbitz, or Expedia, and be sure to check the airline’s website. Even if they don’t have the best price they may offer other incentives such as more miles.
So what’s going to happen to the old terminal? It will become the international terminal in April, with service to parts south of the border via Mexicana Airlines.
In addition to a renovation, 10-thousand feet will be added to accomodate customs and border protection for incoming flights, Hitchcock says.
“It’s just an exciting time here,” she said. “A lot of growth, a lot of new projects going on. The future seems bright.”

This isn’t just a hotel with an elegant restaurant or a state-of-the-art spa; The Dolphin Bay Hotel is a lifestyle of its own.The newest hotel on Shell Beach Road in Pismo Beach, The Dolphin Bay Hotel and Residences is a modern design of simple elegance. If the front entrance and lobby don’t take your breath away, your one or two bedroom suite should do the trick. Many properties up and down the coast boast as being your “home away from home,” but Dolphin Bay scores the winning prize in comfort and accommodation.
Thrill and excitement radiate from Dolphin Bay General Manager, Shaw McPherson when speaking of the hotel’s amenities and desire to go the extra mile for their guests. A native of Alabama, McPherson has worked in Los Angeles and San Francisco and says it wasn’t until he moved to the central coast to establish Dolphin Bay, that he truly felt comfortable and at home.
“When you travel to the central coast, there’s a sense of no worrying or the need to feel you have to be busy all of the time,” he says. “And Dolphin Bay makes sure that sense of relaxation and being at peace is continuously kept.”
The hotel opened February 15 and has since been “the” destination of choice for many locals and residents throughout the central valley. In fact, McPherson says some of their repeat customers come from Bakersfield.

First Impressions
Upon walking into the hotel’s lobby, elegant modern art décor is the first thing to capture your eye. The next would be the undeniable smiles of the hotel’s staff, eagerly awaiting your check-in.
“A lifestyle,” McPherson says. “I think that’s the simplest way to describe the unique property we have here.”
Guests visiting the Dolphin Bay are treated to a stay of undivided attention in a world of modern luxury. Whether you’re a family on vacation or a couple embarking on a romantic getaway, Dolphin Bay is at your service to ensure your stay is memorable and worry free.
“Whether our guests need to use our Denali to go into San Luis for the day or would like the restaurant to pack them a lunch for a day at the beach, we are here to make your every request a reality,” McPherson says.
In keeping true to their lifestyle motto, prior to your arrival, Dolphin Bay will send you an e-mail confirmation and a request form for groceries that you would want during your stay, if you would like. However, keep in mind the hotel requires at least 48 hours notice of your grocery needs to make sure you have everything during your stay.
“Sometimes people need a vacation from their vacation,” McPherson says. “While you are out sightseeing, shopping, golfing or just enjoying the beach, you can rest assured we’ll take care of you when you are at the hotel.”
Nightly reservations begin at $405 a night for a single room suite (960 square feet) or $505 a night for a two-room suite (approximately 1700 square feet). But the fun doesn’t stop there. The hotel also offers a $1200 a night, two-bedroom penthouse (2,200 square feet). Regardless of the room your stay encompasses, your jaw will drop as you walk into any of the rooms. Marble floors, granite counter tops, couches and plasma screen televisions make the Dolphin Bay perfect beyond belief.

“While many vacationers try to acclimate to their surroundings when they are on vacation, we make it easier for them,” McPherson says. “When you’re here, you’re home.”

The Spa
But at home, how often are you treated to a massage?
Lavender filters through the air as simple melodies move across the open lobby of the La Bonne Vie Spa at Dolphin Bay. All of the masseuses are well trained and have the magic touch, so you can be certain you’ll be in good hands.
Their hands will move your body back and forth as you would imagine the tide coming in against the coastline’s rocks. The light is dim, so as you lie face down on the massage table you can see the perfectly symmetrical bowl of sand and seashells. Total Zen. Lavender still floats through the air instilling a sense of natural repose as the masseuse’s hands and fingers work their magic.
The hour will seem to go by with a blink of an eye, and the tight ball of stress nestled in the small of your back will become nothing more than a painful distant memory.
Highly recommended by guests is the spa’s Effectual massage. This choice will grant you the experience of aromatherapy added to the classic Swedish technique to relax both body and mind. Also an inviting choice is Excel, the spa’s therapeutic deep tissue sport massage. Both are $110 for 60 minutes and $140 for 90 minutes. Extraordinary is a relaxing mix of warm basalt stones drizzled with oil to melt tension and invoke deep relaxation ($150 for 90 minutes).
The pampering doesn’t stop there.
La Bonne Vie offers a multitude of self-preservation and relaxation options such as the in style facial rejuvenation and cellulite reduction services. And we can’t forget the popular pedicures, manicures, and numerous face treatments.

  The Restaurant
Ready to serve three meals a day, The Dolphin Bay’s signature fine dining restaurant, Lido, will cast a spell on you.
Lido’s magic is in the food. Its spellbinding charm is in the atmosphere and first class staff.
Whether you dine inside the restaurant or outside on the patio overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean, your experience at Lido will be no less than having a red carpet rolled out for you.
Under the creative-culinary mind of Chef Evan Treadwell, Lido serves meals throughout the day, seven days a week. The notion of appetizer versus entrée has disappeared: all selections are available in two sizes, allowing guests to create their own tastings or stick with traditional courses. The restaurant’s wine list is also exciting. It is full of local winery gems, creating a Central Coast dining experience found nowhere else along the shoreline. Highly recommended is the Maple Brined Pork Chop served with fresh green beans, corn relish and a deliciously grilled white pear. In addition, if that’s not enough, which we hope it’s not, you must try the Mocha Cheesecake – it’s simply heaven on a pristine white plate. This Fall, Lido will be releasing new menu items. One of these divine items will be a seasonal Carrot Cake Bread Pudding; a specialty hotel staff says is superb.
Whether your stay is for a night or for a week, any moment spent at The Dolphin Bay is priceless.
